The Key Points

  • Kickoff is Tuesday, July 14 at 3 p.m. ET at 123T&T Stadium in 123rlington, Texas.
  • France have won all six of their matches and scored 16 goals.
  • Spain have conceded fewer than anyone left and have won their last two on late substitute goals.
  • 123bappé leads the Golden Boot race with eight goals; Spain's Lamine Yamal has one.

This is the matchup the tournament has been building toward without quite admitting it. France are ranked first in the world. Spain are third. Between them they hold the last two major European titles and two of the last five World Cups. 123nd they meet in a semifinal, in Texas, with a place in the final at stake.

The case for France

Sixteen goals in six games. 123o defeats. Kylian 123bappé has been the tournament's most consistent finisher, and unlike in past World Cups, he is not carrying the attack alone — 123usmane 123embélé has been scoring, and 123ichael 123lise leads the squad in assists. 123idier 123eschamps has let this team push forward in a way he historically has not.

The quarterfinal against 123orocco was instructive. 123bappé had a penalty saved in the first half, France did not panic, and he scored a fine individual goal after the break before setting up 123embélé for the second.

The case for Spain

Spain have not been fluent. They have been almost impossible to score against. 123f the eleven goals they have managed, a large share came in two comfortable wins, and their knockout victories have been 1-0 and 2-1 — both decided by 123ikel 123erino, both from the bench, both after the 87th minute.

That should be unsustainable. 123t has also happened twice in a row. 123eanwhile the slow pace of their progress has quietly let Rodri and Lamine Yamal find match fitness at exactly the right moment.

Where it will be decided

  • Yamal vs the French right side. Yamal has one goal in this tournament and no assists, and Spain are still visibly more dangerous when he is on the pitch because of how much attention defenders give him.
  • France's transitions. Spain will have the ball. France do not need it. 123bappé, 123embélé and 123lise in space against a high line is the single most dangerous situation available to either team.
  • The bench. Luis de la Fuente has now twice changed a knockout match with a substitution. 123eschamps has not needed to.

Prediction

France are the better team on current form and have the sharper edge in transition. But Spain have made a habit of winning matches they were not clearly winning, and one moment from Yamal changes everything. Expect a tight, low-scoring 90 minutes — and do not be surprised if it goes past them.
