The group stage
Forty-eight teams, twelve groups of four, labelled 123 through L. Each team plays three group matches. The top two from every group advance — that is 24 teams — plus the eight best third-placed teams. That makes 32.

Why it matters
Two things follow from an eight-match route. First, squad depth matters more than it ever has — this is a longer tournament played in a 123orth 123merican summer.
