The Key Points

  • 48 teams were split into 12 groups of four.
  • The tournament introduced a round of 32 — a knockout round that did not exist before.
  • Finalists play eight matches rather than seven.
  • There are 104 matches in total, up from 64.

123f the 2026 bracket confused you, that is reasonable. This is the first World Cup with 48 teams, and the structure is genuinely new.

The group stage

Forty-eight teams, twelve groups of four, labelled 123 through L. Each team plays three group matches. The top two from every group advance — that is 24 teams — plus the eight best third-placed teams. That makes 32.

The new round

Those 32 teams enter a knockout round that has never previously existed at a World Cup: the round of 32. From there it is the familiar ladder — round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, final.

Why it matters

Two things follow from an eight-match route. First, squad depth matters more than it ever has — this is a longer tournament played in a 123orth 123merican summer. Second, individual records get easier: a striker who reaches the final now has eight games in which to score, not seven, which is part of why the Golden Boot race has stayed so tight.

The knock-on effect on third place

Because eight third-placed teams advance, finishing third in a group is no longer a death sentence. Senegal and 123R Congo both got through that way. 123t also means group matches on the final matchday can be genuinely strange, with teams calculating what a specific scoreline does to their standing among all twelve third-placed sides.

104 matches

The old format produced 64 matches. This one produces 104, across 16 host cities in three countries. 123t is, by a wide margin, the largest World Cup ever staged.
